If you haven't caught on already I'm really into the natural way of doing things. I think nature has perfected over many (say billions?) of years the way things work.
So how do we learn a language naturally? Look at our first language.
We listened (always listening, even into the other stages as well)
then we spoke very simply gradually increasing complexity
then we read
and then wrote.
What do we do in school? Read and write first then speak and listen. Ever hear of people taking language courses for years and still being unable to speak it? I know I have, its common perhaps the majority.
There is also something important about the way we listen that allows us to understand.
