Hey guys, I just wanted to drop down a peeve of mine quickly. It’s something that unconsciously makes you look, unconfident, sketchy, insecure, confused, and or uncomfortable depending on the rest of your demeanor.
Akin to walking with limbs held tightly to your body, or walking with your head down (and not to watch your step).
Walking while looking down at your phone!
I see people do this everyday and their expressions nearly always give away why they are doing it.
It is almost always an unconscious defense mechanism to take attention away from your environment. Most people do it when they are nervous and not when they actually need to look at something.
Like i’ll see a guy do it almost right after acknowledging another passerby, waking past a group, or a cute girl.
I believe it is out of fear, of negative judgement, being harassed, or socialization.
One dead giveaway is when someone will pull it out right before walking past a group of people, or right after. And the motion is often hurried as if it’s a reflex.
It is often accompanied with blank facial expressions, head tilted downward, phone close to chest, glances up to make sure they aren’t about to run into anything.
I’d have to assume it makes people feel guarded, and or it makes them look like they’re doing something, when all it does is make them look insecure!
I’m no stranger to checking my phone while out and about, but only when there is something that is actually calling my attention. And even then i’d much rather pause and lean up against some wall then walk and dabble at the same time, head down.
For instance if i’m walking and receive a call, i’ll stop, slide it out, step out of the path, answer, talk for a minute, then continue walking if it is a prolonged call.
If I get a text i’ll do the same or won’t even check it at all.
If you must, absolutely must use it while walking, atleast sell whatever it is you’re doing. Don’t pull it out to avoid the perception of other people or whatever it is people do this for.
