But then dude goes back at the end to explain it. NIce. Notice how the first one he goes back to is the cutest one, who seemed pretty responsive to him.

Bet you anything these "almost pickups" are getting him some actual pickups.

Ah, so that's what it looks like in practice. I had seen the advice about using that line, but it didn't really seem congruent with my personality. After seeing that though, I'm going to have to try it.
