I've recently started to get more interested in politics lately, probably because I used to be so out of touch with current events. This Kavanaugh-Ford situation is blowing up all over the media and the entire country. Apparently, a lot of people see this as an extension of the #MeToo movement from last year and are saying how things are starting to get blurry in law and politics because of how much power mere accusations seem to have and are contradictory to the entire basis of our legal system which is innocent until proven guilty.
I must say, from everything I've watched and read, it really does seem like a political power play from the Democrats side. Of course there is no way of knowing for sure what happened, but the circumstances surrounding this situation seem to point in that direction. I mean, the allegations first came to surface at the end of July and the accuser (Ford) had requested for it to be confidential. I honestly believe that she is just as much a victim in this fiasco as is Judge Kavanaugh.
Instead, these allegations are brought up at the last possible minute and now the media and primarily the left are trying to question Kavanaugh's character and are deeming him unfit for the Supreme Court based in his emotions displayed at the hearing. I mean c'mon, the guy is being accused of one of the most heinous crimes known to man, the process and handling of this was terrible, and his name and reputation has been destroyed along with that of his family's. I think reacting the way he did was perfectly justifiable. Besides, he seemed to display emotion while still being in control and not letting his emotions erupt like a volcano.
Some people are asking him to step down due to the allegations even though nothing has been proved against him. On top of that, one thing that really bothers me is how a lot of people are trying to exclaim that this isn't a time for due process and that the accuser doesn't need to prove anything. I personally think that throwing out due process is extremely dangerous territory to be in and the fact that some people don't think it matters or applies here is ridiculous.
Curious to hear what some of you guys think. Is this really the beginning of a dark time for the United States?
