I've recently started to get more interested in politics lately, probably because I used to be so out of touch with current events. This Kavanaugh-Ford situation is blowing up all over the media and the entire country. Apparently, a lot of people see this as an extension of the #MeToo movement from last year and are saying how things are starting to get blurry in law and politics because of how much power mere accusations seem to have and are contradictory to the entire basis of our legal system which is innocent until proven guilty.

I must say, from everything I've watched and read, it really does seem like a political power play from the Democrats side. Of course there is no way of knowing for sure what happened, but the circumstances surrounding this situation seem to point in that direction. I mean, the allegations first came to surface at the end of July and the accuser (Ford) had requested for it to be confidential. I honestly believe that she is just as much a victim in this fiasco as is Judge Kavanaugh.

Instead, these allegations are brought up at the last possible minute and now the media and primarily the left are trying to question Kavanaugh's character and are deeming him unfit for the Supreme Court based in his emotions displayed at the hearing. I mean c'mon, the guy is being accused of one of the most heinous crimes known to man, the process and handling of this was terrible, and his name and reputation has been destroyed along with that of his family's. I think reacting the way he did was perfectly justifiable. Besides, he seemed to display emotion while still being in control and not letting his emotions erupt like a volcano.

Some people are asking him to step down due to the allegations even though nothing has been proved against him. On top of that, one thing that really bothers me is how a lot of people are trying to exclaim that this isn't a time for due process and that the accuser doesn't need to prove anything. I personally think that throwing out due process is extremely dangerous territory to be in and the fact that some people don't think it matters or applies here is ridiculous.

Curious to hear what some of you guys think. Is this really the beginning of a dark time for the United States?

While I don't have a strong opinion on this particular case, what bothers me the most is that people are acting as if what someone did in the past reflects who and what they are today, with little to no consideration for one's growth as a person.

Whether Kavanaugh did what he did when he was a young man doesn't reflect his ability to be a supreme court justice. His ability to discern, follow the law by the law, and treat the constitution as the highest auhority, among other qualifications, are examples of determinates for the position - not whether or not he has (unproven) allegations from long ago that just so happened to surface now.

In this sense, people are being taught by the media how to make decisions about credentials and to weigh skeletons from long ago as a reflection of present character. That's both annoying and dangerous.

This is not to say I think Kavanaugh is fit for the position, that's not a subject I take issue in one way or another.

Like anything in culture, the pendulum must swing in the direction it does. With the state of the gropocalypse, I think a lot of people are getting sick about how the media destroys a person's life before justice has been served, so perhaps things may swing back sometime soon.

Let's hope it's in the direction of moderation, and things don't get too messy.

I get that Hue, I think it's ridiculous that they pounded him with questions about whether he likes beer, drank beer, ever got blacked out and going through some things he wrote in his yearbook. I was watching some of these senators speak and I was embarrassed and was questioning as to how some of these people are our lawmakers. How crazy is it that they were scrutinizing the word boof or whatever that meant flatulence lmao.

Agreed in that who he was in high school/college in no way reflects his qualifications to be a supreme court justice. Apparently people don't mess around with accusations when it comes to sexual assault nowadays. President Trump made a good point today when he mentioned that nobody has asked about the past 25 years regarding Kavanaugh's professional life and the way he has conducted himself, which many people say has been outstanding.

In this sense, people are being taught by the media how to make decisions about credentials and to weigh skeletons from long ago as a reflection of present character. That's both annoying and dangerous.

Yes exactly! That's what I was hinting at with this post. The precedent this hearing and situation has set is a disgrace to our entire country. I already believe some damage has already been done. If a mere allegation can come to bear so much power and influence, what's to stop dishonest people from taking advantage for personal and/or political gain?

I hope this is the catalyst for the pendulum to start swinging in the proper direction. This has already upset millions of Americans and many people are coming to realize the craziness of the media and the danger surrounding what has become of this craziness. It's amazing that some people (primarily the left) have come out and said that the onus is on Kavanaugh to prove himself innocent. Smh what's wrong with people.

I'm glad you can have a balanced opinion Hue, as you can tell I'm a little triggered ;)
