Note: I'm a bar novice.
Friday night.
I was on the bus, looking outside of the window, and saw a line of people in front of the bar. So apparently bar was re-opening. I'd improve my social skills way faster in a bar, so I was giving it a try.
Jumping out of the bus a block later. Going to the line. Vibing with a girl, she loved the vibe but did not comply. Chatting with another guy.
Then chatting with the door girls. Screening temp. She had mask but showing her face, not blatantly but kind of breaking the rule like @Velasco described in some thread. I did the same.
Sitting in the bar. Bartender came and asked what I wanted to drink. One simple rule was that if I didn't know what to do, just inquiring. Asking her to recommend a beer and got one. One beer max to keep myself sober.
There was the sign saying "Social distance enforced. 6 feet required." if my memory served correctly. Immediately I thought how can I break the rule? Here were my ideas:
- I must be cool: Tipping the staff well, not being a social burden.
- Not blatantly breaking the rule, but breaking the rule enough: Not going around mass approaching. But I approached twice through the night:
Going to restroom, coming back and seeing a girl by herself in the corner, I came close to her, waiting 2 seconds, and opened. She said thanks and turned back to her drink.
Two girls sat near me, I turned my head around and waved my hand. Second girl noticed, first girl turned to me and I said hi, she turned back.
^ Me not being the kind of guy they were looking for
^ 2 approaches done in 2 hours to avoid the "blatant PUA" vibe
- Being what people looking for: I didn't know, so I was just in there for 2 hours for observing. I did a few things:
Bartender came across me and raised thumbs up. He was looking for cool so I was cool back.
Pair of guys next to me. At one point they split, the other guy was hang around by himself so I just introduced myself to him. I should have stayed in long conversation.
First I came to restroom, door girl came close to me. She was looking for plausible deniability, so I said I went to the restroom.
^ my friend because we were both rule breakers but not being blatant about it.
Staffs chatting around me at one point. I did not know how to interject in convo so I did nothing.
Other people in venue were chill. I was just chill with my beer. Too boring so I was on the phone.
Bartender looking for good tip, I guessed. So I tipped well.
(Another) door girl said good night. She was looking for normal people, no awkward, so I just said goodbye back.
