Hello all,

I'm looking to move to DC

I need a place that is walking distance to the metro, a super market and won't break the bank.

Any suggestions?

Nice, get a government / contracting / consulting job? D.C.'s a great town.

If you're looking to live in D.C., I recommend either Adams Morgan or Dupont Circle. Adams Morgan if you want more of the college bar type experience for going out and lifestyle, Dupont Circle if you want more of the lounge / alternative / international scene. Since you'll be in D.C., these areas will be pricier, of course. You might want to get roommates. There's also Georgetown, which is the preppy / upper crust area for young people in D.C. They specifically do NOT have a metro station, though, out of a desire to avoid the undesirables who find their ways to neighborhoods that make transportation easier.

If you don't have to be in D.C. proper, I suggest Arlington. It's safe, relatively convenient, middle/upper class, and 60% female. Plenty of bars in the area, though you'll still likely head to D.C. more often than not for going out. Court House and Clarendon are two popular living spots, right next to the Court House and Clarendon metro stations, respectively. Good lifestyle, supermarkets, gyms, etc. Clean, nice buildings and sidewalks. Happy people.

Do not stay anywhere in Maryland, or in the North parts of D.C. These areas are cheaper, but it's because they're in the hood. There's been a great deal of white flight out of the D.C. metro area on the Maryland side. I had a girlfriend in Silver Spring right near the metro who had her apartment broken into and her electronics stolen, and this was back in 2007 (it's gotten worse since then). They later discovered a group of criminals sneaked into the building, broken into one apartment, then literally tunneled through the drywall on one floor during the daytime so they could go apartment-to-apartment and clean the place out without looking too suspicious going into and out of apartments in the corridor. I took a huge, tall, incredibly burly black friend of mine to a club in D.C.'s northeast once and had him crapping his pants the whole walk thinking we were going to get mugged because of the condition of the area.

All of D.C. suffers a "crime wave emergency" every summer, so that's something else to be wary of there. Just clear out of town or get back home before 2:45 AM and you'll usually be okay. If you're still out at 3 AM, that's when it starts to get bad.

Also avoid places deeper in Virginia, though for the opposite problem. I knew a lot of folks who stayed in Alexandria, Herndon, or Fairfax and they're just very tame areas. I suppose if you're not intent on going out too much they could be okay. But very tame, not much nightlife, not a lot else going on in general, and they're pretty far from the action in D.C. Generally speaking, even if you live in Arlington, expect a 45-minute to one-hour commute if you want to travel from home to a D.C. bar or nightclub. Double that if you're farther out (Alexandria, Herndon, Fairfax).

Trying to figure things, weighing my options.

Thanks Chase for the great info! It's awesome to hear from someone who's actually been there.

Let's see what the future holds.....

Hey Professional, I'm currently living in DC metro area - did you end up moving out here? I'm looking for a wingman so hit me up if you're in DC and are interested!
