my sister tends to gravitate towards aggressive responses for no reason and even when I snap back at her in the same tone she uses

Snapping back in the "same" (i.e. female) tone is possibly the absolute greatest turnoff for a woman, be it your sister, your girlfriend or that bratty professor you secretly fantasize about It has to be about as unmasculine behavior as a man is capable of.

I want to know how to handle it outside of romance, because when I snap back at girls who are bitchy (who I'm not sexually interested in), it escalates the situation.
But if I just let them act that way towards me, I feel weakened and battered.

Snapping back at your girlfriend if she is being very out of line can be very effective as long as you are very clear about what she is doing that is disrespectful and upsetting to you. But you'll often want to snap back even harder if she's being very out of line and is trying to be controlling.

However, outside of this scenario, snapping back at women is pretty much never the answer. Remaining unfazed in the face of bitchiness is pretty much your best approach toward it -- remember, you're a "busy, valuable man" who doesn't have time to argue with the trivial nonsense that women bring up. You're better off just ignoring women who are trying to get a rise out of you and are not your girlfriend. The reason why snapping back works better when it's your girlfriend or significant other is that she is often trying to test the relationship to see if you're still the powerful man she met at the beginning, and she doesn't really want to be in control in the long-term.

So when girls outside of romance are giving you bitchiness, just smirk and change the subject or ignore the topic. You don't have time for that shit.
