Brazil for a few months stay w/o speaking Portuguese

Has anybody here had any experience staying in Brazil for a few months without speaking Portuguese ? I am interested in trying, but don't really want to finish in a bubble where I cannot understand a word around me, and nobody can understand a word of what I say. Thanks for your replies
