I just got home from an outing with my family, and had a great opportunity to learn something.
While talking with my father, something happened among my other family causing me to mention a word which I thought was appropriate to the scenario. I was fairly sure of its meaning, but in an almost cavalier manner without thinking, I said to my father, "You should look up the definition for it," while gesturing to the smartphone in his hand.
He responded in the warmest voice possible and said, "Oh I should, should I?" with an amused grin on his face, before calmly placing his phone on the table beside him.
Blew. Me. Out. Of. The. Water.
He did it so nonchalantly that I couldn't help but admire how he handled it. It reminded me of how to deal with unnecessary compliance tests from women and men, and made me think about how I could have more aptly posed my request in the first place.
While he has been with one woman his whole life, (married for over 20 years), he still garners great respect not only from his wife, but other women too, for having firm boundaries of what behavior he will and will not tolerate. I have much to learn from him!
