For context I'm a beginner, I'm still at that stage where I'm figuring out IOIs as well as how to respond to IOIs.
Last night I went to a V-day themed winter ball held by my school. I ran into a guy I know, he introduced me to his friends. One of which was a girl, she recognized me from a beginner's Tango class I took like a year ago. I figure the fact that she remembered me despite only meeting briefly a year ago was a positive sign, she was also open to light touch almost immediately, again I also interpreted that as a good sign. She said I was cold (it is winter outside) and I made a joke about how I'm dead. I realize this was a bad joke but I struggled to think of something witty off the top of my head. Looking back something like 'yeah I'm looking for someone to warm me up' would have probably been better. She said 'you're dead?!' I said 'yeah hell isn't as bad as you think it is.' She responded with 'What cause you're gay" I interpreted this as a shit test so I said "would you be disappointed if I were". I don't remember her exact response but anyway, I kind of led her to the dance floor and we danced for several songs, she was very open to touch and having a good time, my hand on her back and stuff. Then suddenly she stopped and said "I need to go find my friends" and left. I saw her go to the ladies room, I went to the men's room. I saw her talking, just talking not dancing or anything else, to another guy. I decided to go home, I didn't want to look desperate by pursuing her. I also found her insta and sent a request which she had not responded to, which I'm taking as a soft rejection.
The interaction started off VERY positive but just turned around very quickly and I'm not sure what I should have done differently. Maybe made flirty banter while dancing although she seemed to just be enjoying the song and the movement. We were dancing, our hands touching and my hand sometimes on her back or arm but I didn't want to risk escalating further in a public place like that surrounded by our schoolmates.
