Dates: to sid beside or across?

Simple question people,
Do you guys prefer to sit across the girl in a date or beside?
I have found that it's much easier to escalate physically while sitting beside although its harder to give the 'piercing eye contact, dreamy/bedroom eyes'.

And what are the proper ways to escalate sitting opposite to her?

It should be EASIER to have piercing eye contact etc, when beside her, due to proximity. Ideally, she's "open" to you, and you two are still having face-to-face contact, even though you're sitting beside each other. It just makes proximity/touch easier.
