Do girls use flattery as a trap?

I'm realising a conundrum about women that has tripped me up in the past. I don't think they do it on purpose.
You meet a girl and sleep with her (or hook up but don't have sex not for lack of trying), everything goes great, and she tells you "you're the most amazing guy I've ever been with" or "you're so sexy" etc, etc. Over the top flattery. It would make you think she is in love with you (well, she might be) but let's say you are not going to see her for a while. Then she doesn't try to contact you at all. When you see her you have sex and it's the same deal, but she doesn't try to pursue anything futher.
Based on all of her flattery, you would think this girl is super into you and would want more.
Could a girl be super into you and make no long-distance contact or is it more of an act to try to get a guy more invested? Based on all of the things this girl says, it would seem she's super into me, but based on her lack of any contact I feel that it's probably not that intense. Or could it just be her current emotional state after sex and those feelings subside afterwards?
I've fallen into this before thinking it was "love" and ended up chasing after her, yada yada. I've learned my lesson and am able to be much cooler about this situation - but I'm confused.
