Walking after dark in a lively town, there was advertisement for an open mic night, happening now. Inside was a stage and some chairs with a house guitar sitting in the corner. I trotted in and was greeted by the host. He invited me to play, and I wrote my name down.

On stage, a lovely little poet shared her work, raw and authentic. Our eyes never met, but she told me today how she'd noticed me. She left with a friend, but did see me play, as well as someone ask about my technique.

The next month, I returned, as did she. We both arrived late, and as I got up to sign my name down, she followed and we briefly met eyes. After I sang and she bobbed along, she then spoke up on the stage. Walking back, instead of acknowledging a compliment from the audience, she locked eyes with me. She looked breathless.

Leaving the venue, I slowly donned my coat, seeing her gathering things in peripherals. Walking to the door, she sped to exit behind me. As always when holding the door, I turned and and met eyes so that she could say thanks. Having not made an approach for close to half a year and going totally offline, we parted ways.

I saw her cross the street and stop a parking garage elevator. Passing by on the way to my own free street parking, I turned over my shoulder and raised up a hand, asking for her to send me her song from last month. She immediately complied and asked for my handle, then when told no gave me her phone opened to a new message for my number. Here I learned the story of her name.

I asked what she was up to as she hopped inside the elevator, then quickly said let's hang out as the doors started closing. She stopped them and said she was going for food, then the club, and proposed that I meet her there. I said that was unlikely tonight, but we'll see.

Four days later, she arrived in a fishnet halter top, black leather jacket, and black baggy pants. As we strolled through a freely open building with interesting architecture, I dove deep. There we ran into someone from the open mic, which was close to an hour away. We sat for a while, legs touching, then bounced to get tea, seated next to each other. There her eye contact improved with time. After two hours total, she had to get home. With ten minutes to go, we bounced up to my apartment quickly, then down. As she walked toward her car, I grabbed her above the elbow, pulled her toward me, cupped her cheek with the other hand, and kissed her. I then stopped and she kissed me back.

Five days later, she arrived and we walked around the corner to a restaurant with booths. Seated together, she ordered and ate while I drank a water. After half hour or so, we were the sole patrons. As the waiter put chairs on the tables around, we got up, she dropped cash, and we walked up a block to my place, all unsaid.

I then sensed she was still needing comfort, so broke the 10 minute kiss rule. She asked to hear a recording of the song I'd played with the full instrumentation. Soon after, I let conversation lapse. We met eyes, held the silent tension briefly, and I kissed her. We then spent a few hours in bed.

Here's the texting.

Late 20's

Lay #50

Me (from her phone): Francis
Me (from her phone): [her name]
Her: We're catching coffee but then I'm going to the club

Me: Nice running into you [her name]. Wish I could come with you... I've got to head to [city] tonight

Her: Me too, you stay out that way?

Me: Yeah in [area]. Gotta get up early. You free this week to connect?

Her: Yeah, I live down that way, got work at 8, I'm free Wednesday I believe

Me: Well I hope you got your release on the dance floor and still get some sleep. Sure we can do Wednesday. How's like 6 or 7pm?

Her: [voice note about dancing, confirmed time, ending with "what did you have in mind?"]

Me: Good morning. Sounds like your body wasn't ready to rest yet. Hope it wasn't too tough getting out in the flurries this morning.
What I really had in mind is having you over to record, but I don't have any gear here yet. So just curious to get to know you. Maybe a simple tea or something?

Her: Oh I hate the cold and the snow. Hopefully you made it out safe as well. I somehow managed to make it to work on time. No, sometimes I really just have to dance it out, especially during the work week.

Her: Yeah, that sounds nice, I love tea.

Me: Yeah I was so close to sleeping in the car then saw the forecast... Figured it was best to wake up at home.
Ok piping hot tea it is. Depending on your area I can meet closer, or there's a place right by me if you're comfortable coming into [city].

Her: I love sleeping in my car honestly. As weird as that sounds and lately I've been considering the full time travel thing a lot more.
Hell yeah. And yeah, they have some great coffee shops in [city], I'm only about 20 - 25 minutes out

Me: It feels very freeing doesn't it... Like anywhere is open to you. Ok I'm game for any of a [city1] open mic, [city2] cafe, or pot of tea right near my place.
Fun story [redacted]. Hope your day is going good.

Her: Absolutely. I was going to suggest [city 1], I love it there. I've never been to Pot of Tea, is it good?

Her: And ok, just keep me updated.

Her: I'm just getting off work and now I'm cleaning my room and singing music to myself bc the vacuum is to loud to hear the radio and I'm like to dumb to have thought of my airpods til just now.

Her: How's yours?
Her: And yes, I love feeling like I can go anywhere

Me: I suppose it's good you weren't so smart and ended up singing. It can be rewarding to get carried away by your default impulses.
Oh I mean right here there is a cozy little restaurant that can make a pot of tea. Today's been great all things considered.
I [redacted]. Might be safer to stay close by, but whatever works

...

Me: Hi [her name], I hope my teasing didn't come off wrong. Anyways, I'd prefer getting to know you here than do the open mic, but understand if you're cautious
I get even if you're safe without any obligation, it's tough to trust someone unknown. Just let me know what you're down for.

Her: No, you're ok lol. I just shifted shifts so I've been sleeping and watching HP. I just got to work for the night shift lol.
I'll text you back here in a little bit, I'm [redacted].

Me: Ok good luck. No worries or rush at all

Her: You like comedy?

Me: No I hate laughter. Why, got a joke?

Her: That is exactly my kind of humor lmao.
No, I heard [place in city 1] is hosting a comedy open mic, I don't do comedy but I love that shit lol

Me: Curious how you can bare yourself on stage and now hesitate to speak or look at each other. How about anywhere to talk... Like the [cafe], or the library.
Have you ever seen the [city2 branch]?

Her: What do you mean? And no I havent?

Me: It's like seeing a movie... Just a wall.

Me: It's gorgeous. Just a nice spot to stroll

Her: I have no problem talking or getting to know each other, it was just a suggestion that sounded fun. Uhm, yeah. I've never been there but it sounds nice. Where is that?

Me: Well that's nice you want to have fun with me. I'm just busting your balls. It's right on [redacted].

Her: Ok. That works. Do you have an address for it?

Me: Sure, yeah [redacted, parking logistics]

Me: Okee, and where are we walking too just around or are we getting coffee/tea as well?
I hate the cold so much.

Me: Yes just inside, then we can slip inside for tea at [restaurant] across the street
If you're lucky there might be a spot at its front door on the [redacted].

Her: Okee lol. Sounds fun. I'll meet you there. I've never been there either I dint think lol

Me: Great. Well enjoy your day off [her name]. I'll check in a bit before

[Redacted, logistics]

Her: Just made it home 🥰 [smile emoji with hearts]

[Redacted texting with personal details, including a few voice notes from her]

Her: And thank you for appreciating them. I always get mixed responses, I just prefer it

Her: My whole night was weird as fuck

Me: Hopefully an interesting type of weird that beats boring as fuck. Your voice is also just generally pleasing to listen to.
Anyways, yeah I'll be [redacted]. Let me know what works with your timing for tomorrow.

Her: [redacted]. My friend dropped a huge bomb on our lives yesterday and I'm feeling a million ways about it right now.
I [redacted] and I'll be good
I hope you had a good day yesterday and hopefully it wasn't as eventful as mine tbh
And thank you. 🥰 [smiling emoji with hearts].

[Various redacted]

Me: Let me guess. Sudden proclamation of hidden infatuation.
You can tell me or decide not to. Whatever the case, and however you may be feeling about it, just consider me a refuge from the outside world.

[Note I took a gamble guessing, mainly to set a strong lover frame to counteract deep discussion by sub communicating we can coexist if she's feeling like pursuing something serious elsewhere. Expectations had also been set on the date. Her next voice note expressed liking people who are honest about intentions up front. Turns out what happens is her very close friend got pregnant]

Me: Promise ring guy??? [Previously mentioned on date 1]
What a rollercoaster thinking that she [redacted]. Agreed you need to share values and attitudes especially with half influence on kids.
Absolutely insane to freeze her out newly pregnant. Having a million feelings make sense now. Of course that'd hit you hard and brings your own life into focus.
Besides writing poems, I think if you come lay down to look at the ceiling (whatup @Chase ) and take a few deep breaths it could help to decompress. Let's pick this up tomorrow.

Her: Ok lol, we will. Yeah. [Redacted, personal, then extended logistics
