It was Saturday evening and I decided to hit up these outlet malls that I haven't been to in years. I got there around 6:15pm and they closed at 9. Thought I would check out a few stores and see if there's anything I'd like to get. After checking out a few stores, I stroll into Calvin Klein. I'm browsing the jeans and end up over looking at the button-down shirts. A few feet over I see a worker who looked pretty cute from the corner of my eyes. I casually make my way over to where she was folding clothes, and I notice her check me out (or what appeared to be) by turning her body to look and then back and then this time just her head. I tell myself ok this girl seems pretty interested.
I start checking out some dress shirts and such near where she was for a few minutes while thinking of a way good way to open. I know it's better to just jump and say whatever but I'm still managing my approach anxiety. So I said fuck it and started walking until I ended up right next to her and opened with this:
Me: "Excuse me, do you guys sell speedos here?"
Girl: Shakes her head and says no they don't.
Me: "I'm just kidding, I just thought you were cute and wanted to introduce myself, I'm BBeyond."
Girl: "Oh haha I'm Kate"
Me: "That's a cute name (unnecessary to say looking back on it, but was trying to plow through some anxiety and that's what came out)"
Me: "So, do you got any big plans for tonight? It's the weekend."
Her: I have some family from out of town visiting."
Me: "Oh cool, where are they visiting from?"
Her: "They're visiting from Seattle blah blah blah"
Me: "Nice, I hear Seattle's a really cool city."
Her: "Yeah it's fun but it's really expensive (she said something else here but I don't remember exactly)"
Me: "Yeah I have heard that. Have you ever been?"
Her: "Not for a long time since I was little"
We talked a bit more about Seattle and when she was going next, but then she did something weird. She then told me "oh wait, I just went there last year. Duh." I was thinking ok maybe she was a bit nervous/shy or she was so thrown off guard by my approach that she was forgetting things. We continue to talk about travel and I ask her if she has ever been overseas. She said no at first, and then I asked if she could go anywhere where would she go. She then says "oh wait, I did go to Italy last summer." At this point I'm like wtf is up with this girl suddenly remembering things. Anyways, she mentions that she would like to go to Croatia sometime. I told her about my travels to Europe 2 summers ago. And she thought I said Italy, but I actually said that my friend was Italian and that he went to Italy. I told her I went to Serbia blah blah.
I didn't want to get into too deep a convo with her (even though it seems like I was deep diving, though unintentionally) and I tell her I need to try some clothes on but that she seems like a cool girl and we should get together this week and get to know each other a little bit better. She says she can't and I tease her by saying that they have her working so many hours that she can't get a break. She says that she's getting ready to go on vacation to Key West and that's why she can't meet up because they're giving her a lot of hours. I took that as disinterest and/or me fucking up somewhere. I say it's no biggie but she says "I'm like always here so I'm sure I'll see you if come here often." Don't remember what I said exactly but told her that I did need a fitting room. She said no problem and got me one.
Notes:
1) This was my first time ever directly stating interest in a girl and so there was a bit of nervousness. I did my best to manage and play cool, but I'm not sure if she picked up on any nervousness or whatnot.
2) I probably went for the date suggestion too soon but she was working and I didn't want to take up too much time. Also, I didn't really persist at all. Maybe there were a few hints that I should have picked up on or maybe she was just testing me, but I was already proud of myself for making the approach that I was satisfied with that.
3) She did move around from one clothing table to the other and I turned but was facing sideways. She even remarked "sorry, I changed tables on you" and I said it was cool. I then took my time ending up where she was, but I still felt that I was chasing/following her lead a bit. Didn't think much of it because she was working but I'm confident I could have come up with a better response than "it's cool."
4) I noticed it takes a decent amount of energy for me to approach. I feel I can do it, but right now I feel like approaching 10-15 girls in an outing would be exhausting. Need to make that as effortless as possible.
