While grabbing a late night snack at an all night diner with my gf and another couple, an attractive woman and her older female friend were seated at a booth next to me. As she walked in I noticed she was slender and attractive and had dark hair. I didn't gawk but caught a little incidental eye contact.
The couple from the booth behind where we were sitting engaged us in conversation so I returned their conversation. At this point the other patrons including the attractive woman could hear the conversation without trying too hard. We finished up out meal, paid the bill and headed out. We weren't rowdy but laughing and having fun.
When we returned home my girlfriend mentioned "the dark haired attractive woman was checking me out" during the whole exchange. She was out of my line of vision so I didn't notice.
My Gf mentioned that she (my GF) caught her eye and gave her (the other woman) a grin and a nod.
So, I repeated one of the lines I said loudly (as a joke) "Well sure, I mean would you LOOK at me?" I'd said it as a over the top , egotistical joke. We had a good laugh. But it made me think about how something similar had happened before. How my gf had told me about other women checking me out. About her "mate guarding behavior" and how it was a bit of an ego boost for me. I didn't need to tell her other women were attracted enough to look at me. She saw it herself, AND expressed to me not jealousy but pride. Not feeling threatened or acting jealous. that is attractive to me...
I also thought about when she would mention some guy checked her out. My response? "Well of course! Men aren't blind. That comes with the territory when you have a good looking girlfriend." See how I made it a compliment?
When I read Athol Kay's blog on mate guarding it immediately made sense that in an LTR you do have to do it sometimes....
