Getting up without snooze?

This has become worse and worse for me.... growing up I never had issues getting up when my alarm went off. Now I snooze 3-4 times every morning. When I'm able to get up early and get stuff done before work I'm so much happier, but my brain is pretty much trained to fall back asleep when my alarm goes off at this point.

No matter how early I get to sleep I still have the problem. Meditation hasn't helped either because I can't seem to become conscious before hitting the snooze button

Does anyone have recommendations on how to overcome this?

Change your alarm tones and make it really loud. Also you can put your phone/alarm clock really far away from you so you have to get up and turn it off.

Or if you don't live alone ask your rommates to wake you up if they hear your alarm.

Hey The Handle Formerly (formally?) Known As Brum,

I've had this issue in the past too. It seems to me a mix between your basic need for sleep -- so obviously make sure you get enough sleep -- and your attitude about the forthcoming day.

As for solutions, there's the obvious bullshit like going to sleep at a decent and consistent time or having something social scheduled early on in the day. Those both can work. Also having a robe to slip into at the side of your bed can be good if it's the cold that's keeping you in the sack.

It's good to be excited about what you're going to be doing during the day. That's always a great motivator. I get up happy and early when I'm traveling, for example.

Having an exciting and active thing early on seems to be the most helpful for me.

Though another good one is to just start thinking of yourself as a person who has the power to get up immediately, and feel good about yourself for being that type of person. Make that a part of your identity. Force yourself to get up, and then after a week or two of having to do that, the habit will be ingrained in you, and it'll become easier. The mind is cool like that.

When the alarm goes off, snap yourself out of bed. Literally just rip out of bed, get up and walk around. Do it the first time you hear your alarm and keep doing it for a while. Do that until a habit forms, then even try going without an alarm. Your body gets used to things faster than you think. It's all about just jumping out of bed first time.

There's different things too - put it across from your room, there's even complicated alarms that make you solve math problems (There's apps for that), and even ones that literally hop around to make you chase them and turn them off. I think that's a little extreme, but it's out there if you need it.

Practice. Practice, practice, practice. You need to make a routine in order to consistently get up.

I'm well aware that when waking up in the morning, I'm not in my strongest state of mind. My willpower is pretty low to consciously change what's happening to me, and whenever I left it up to just willpower I would fall right back asleep and snooze for another hour.

Cultivate a pavlovian response to your alarm sound. In order to do this, set yourself into the exact physical environment and state of mind you would be when waking up to your alarm, then set a number of tasks for you to complete as soon as you wake up. My tasks are to: 1) sit up on the edge of my bed, do a long stretch/deep breath, 2) put on my running shoes, 3) walk out the door (to workout).

Treat it like any other exercise - work sets of it every day. Set your alarm for 2 minutes, lay in bed and mentally get in the morning state of mind, then hear your alarm blare and do your tasks. Complete the tasks, wait for a few minutes, then repeat the process. Eventually do these tasks in the morning - and consistently do them to beat in the pattern so that it feels uncomfortable not to wake up and do those tasks.

I've found setting my alarm really loud and putting it on the other side of the room to where I'm forced to get up to turn off the loud ass alarm can help me get up out of bed.

If you want to go back to sleep you are aloud to lie back down but not on your bed, thus the floor.

Chances are you won't fall asleep on the floor and you'll be up in 10 minutes or less especially if its a hard floor.

Although the biggest game changer for me was diet.

I changed my diet to be extremely clean, no gluten, no sugar, no preservatives, and no diary and I find I'm able to snap right into the swing of things.

Even on low sleep. I worked 12 hours ++ three days in a row and the last two days got 5 hrs. of sleep or less and was still able to wake straight up and go back to work.

Diet is king.

Thanks for the tips, I think a little bit of everything will make a difference

This week I switched my alarm from a generic apple tone to a song which helped beacuse i can bare it longer than a tone. The longer the alarm goes of the more likely I am to stay awake....moving it across the room will add to it.

Practicing sets of getting out of bed is something I read about but honestly never gave it a shot so I'm definitley going to give that a try and it should help curve the time it takes to turn it into a routine.

My diet isn't consistent enough.

Rarely looking forward to my day because my job is ehh(working on it).

If I can get this down consistently I think it would add a lot of productivety overall

Is this a routine you guys try to keep going on the weekends as well? It would definitley make Monday's easier.

Diet yes... always

If I go out the night before I'll sleep in and wake up naturally if I don't have pressing issues to wake up for.

Bit late on this one!
you should listen to "Rise and Shine" on youtube, its usually for athletes getting up at 6am to workout and it will definitely provide the motivation your looking for in morning when you can't be bothered getting up.
Listen to it and set it as your alarm if you like it.

I have my phone/tablet by my bed and start reading messages/tinders/emails/blogs etc as soon as possible. Then I don't feel like sleeping anymore.

Everyone,

Meditate before sleeping and rest your head after you wake up for 5 minutes. 5 minutes is just an estimation. Sometimes you meditate for three minutes and then you can sleep.

It helps a lot. Like cooling a motorbike.
