Guys with little sisters - got an explanation for this phenomenon?

Hey Peeps,

Something has been bothering me for a while now. And that one thing is the overprotective big brother instinct. I called it instinct, because no matter the context, if a guy looks at or checks out my little sister, my first impulse is to want to beat him up.

How do other big brothers cope with this? How do you go about with allowing a male into her life?
I suppose if I were in that position, I think I'd check his frame, his attitude towards girls, and his other ambitions.

I'm certain many of you must have been on the other end of this as well, dating/trying to date a girl with a big brother. In which case, I'm going to ask: What did you do to get along with a big brother?

I'm excited to hear your responses!

What did I do to pick her up? I essentially ran game on him first and got his approval first.

Older brothers are a lot like dads and moms, they want what is best for their sister so all you have to do is show that you have character. It also helped that him and I were both huge fans of disc golfing - this guy was the older brother of the best girl I had ever dated as well. I still talk to him to this day even though her and I have broken up.

As a brother myself, I'm fine with what my sister does. She makes her own decisions and doesn't listen to anybody anyway. She's been with some stupid guys, and she's been with some good ones. It's her life to live and unless I feel like the guy is beating her, or abusing her then it's her life to live. Thankfully, no guy has been abusive.

That sheds some light on the matter. So it's akin to making her father approve of you.

As for being a big brother, I think it'll be alright if I converse with her pertaining to her relationship every now and then. I'll be patient, and when I see she's ready to make her own decisions, I'll leave her be but still keep an eye out for her.

I should note that my sister and I are not very close, and she is older than me but only in age. Circumstances were explained by doctors to my parents who took her condition and sheltered her so much (especially my dad) that she's a few years behind where she should be and as such the older brother role was forced on me.

So, I don't and won't have the luxury of ever saying "She's XYZ age so she can handle herself" because I feel like she's always going to act like a 16 year old. It's pretty annoying that she thinks like a 16 year old but is aware of her biological age.

Anyhow RA, it's not really your place to determine when she is old enough to make her own decisions; that's her responsibility and she will often show it before she explains it. One day she'll be your little sister and the next day she'll be telling you "Josh is coming over! We've been dating for a month" and you will have had no idea =)

I'm sure age difference also matters. I'm 5 years older than my sister and we're not that close so I would really have no idea who she hangs out with. she's still in high school and spends most of her time studying. she seems conservative so I wonder what would happen when she gets to college, whether she'll start drinking etc... I only tasted alcohol this year, and I'm a junior. we were raised in a pretty conservative household. (if I came home past 11, I'd get rekt. our parents are strictly against alcohol). but If she said she had a boyfriend I'd probably be chill with it

I'm not sure if my heart can take that shocker haha
Gotta steel myself. Best of luck on your quest for independence.

ShuaiGe,
hey, same age gap!
And if she's conservative, I guess she just has to beware of social pressure. But no use giving you advice about your own sister haha.
