Do you think that hierarchy models are good?

It seems to be a good way to gauge your progress, even though it may seem cold and callous to those outside of the community.

I got to thinking about this after reading the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition:

Edit: This is the wrongly summarized version by Michael Eraut, but I still like Eraut's model (maybe better than the original Dreyfus Model), so I left it here.

  • Novice
"rigid adherence to taught rules or plans"
    no exercise of "discretionary judgment"
  • Advanced beginner
    limited "situational perception"
all aspects of work treated separately with equal importance
  • Competent
"coping with crowdedness" (multiple activities, accumulation of information)
some perception of actions in relation to goals
    deliberate planning
    formulates routines
  • Proficient
    holistic view of situation
    prioritizes importance of aspects
"perceives deviations from the normal pattern"
employs maxims for guidance, with meanings that adapt to the situation at hand
  • Expert
transcends reliance on rules, guidelines, and maxims
"intuitive grasp of situations based on deep, tacit understanding"
has "vision of what is possible"
uses "analytical approaches" in new situations or in case of problems

Of course, you can go up and down on the ladder. I think I'm at Advanced Beginner still, even though I've spent less time purposely practicing seduction (i.e., set days/times) and focusing on 1 woman, so I may have shifted back to Novice due to lack of practice with intent.

How would you rate yourself?

I know GC has a beginner's article that has 3 or 4 levels (I forget how many). Would you create a different hierarchy?

I can definitely fit people on the forums to this model above, and you see it evidenced in field reports, where more advanced guys may deviate from the "rules" and be more of an Expert (and you have less experienced guys like myself scratching our heads and asking "why this or that?") or may not deviate much but have a holistic view with lots of successes and is thus more of a Proficient.
