There's some truth in that.
I actually read a blog post lately from a guy on "How to get over your ex". Basically it was a long way of saying... just go out and get laid. But he wasn't a Pickup guy and it was kind of enjoyable to read because he was just having fun with it. Basically he would just have a few drinks, go to a bar and just chat to every girl he saw in descending order of attractiveness. To be honest, that's what a lot of guys DO.
Guys who are "good" without reading Pickup blogs pretty much just do this. They are just social, confident and don't care about rejection. Just meet their buddies, go to a bar and chat to every girl they see. Is it the most awesome game in the world? No, but to be honest they just naturally have some of the traits we learn here. They aren't phased by rejection, they aren't phased by a girls beauty. They will approach any girl until they hook one.
Now their approach may not be refined. Sometimes it's just hit and hope but in the end its a numbers game. Even without awesome game, if you just meet enough women, some will like you. A lot of guy rely on that. Some actually have honed their skills naturally, they've learned what works, what turns girls on, what excites them, etc... but they've probably just been exposed to the right environments at a younger age and never really found a problem with getting girls.
In the end... game aside, it's just a numbers game. Upping your "game" pulls the numbers more in your favour.
Where guys REALY struggle is that they just lack the natural skills when they are younger (that was me), and they don't really play the numbers game out of fear of approaching and rejection, then they get really frustrated and never really see any success.
This is where I was going with the "If she likes you...." thread. In the end, meeting women or people in general isn't that hard. It's all numbers, and no matter what, some will like you, some won't. Without ever "learning" pickup, it doesn't DOOM you unless you end up depressed about it and fear actually talking to people. If it did, how would humans ever have existed before the writings of Neil Strauss?
