How do you take good pictures of yourself?

How do I take a good picture of myself? I can look really good to myself in a mirror, hair is nice, clothes are nice fitting and look good, etc.

Then either I take a picture of myself, or someone takes a picture of me, and I look like complete trash. Whatever facial hair I have instantly looks sloppy and disgusting, I instantly get a huge ant-eater nose, and all in all, I turn into a mess.

What are some good tips to make yourself look really good? Good poses, good areas and good lighting styles?
