How do you act when you receive a compliment in a professional setting?

"John, I'd like you to meet Alcaeus. He is an amazing young man who received a complete scholarship to Harvard University."

I usually make eye contact, smile and look down. (Trying to go for humility points)

I thinks there is a better way to act, but not sure what it is.

Thanks guys

Well, I used to do sort of the same deal, like you said kind of look down and appear humble. Sometimes even minimize whatever they were complimenting on, like for example, on an accomplishment: "honestly, anyone could do it if they really put their mind to it" (which used to be along the lines my response when people expressed what I would perceive as adulation for my being in the Marine Corps). Nowadays I think it's best to completely hear them out, ensure that you do no interrupt them in anyway, and maintain eye contact as they deliver the compliment. After they finish speaking, I'll pause for a moment to let it "sink in" and give them a sincere "thank you" type response in some way that is appropriate (which should be natural anyway after receiving a compliment cause it should make you feel nice).

What I try to avoid is minimizing, as I mentioned above and also to avoid feeling like I have to reciprocate by also giving them a compliment in some way. Don't get me wrong, you can shoot a compliment back their way in certain situations, but it must be very genuine and not feel like you're saying it cause you feel like "owe" them something.
