Some people think you always need to say goodbye. Some people say it's more socially intelligent to leave without interrupting the conversation, but if there are only a handful of people left, you should interrupt their conversation and bid them farewell.

I'm leaning towards the latter mentality. I've done both, and do recall the unappreciated looks of people deep in conversation just so I can say goodbye. Thoughts?

My take... use your judgment, if the person looks like they could use the interruption (e.g. being bored out of his/her skull by someone annoying) go ahead and interrupt; if they're deep in rapt conversation, on the other hand, here's your perfect opportunity to break out your nonverbal skill. Tap on the elbow, eye contact, raise hand in a masculine wave or (even better) casual mock-salute. And seconds later you're out the door.
