Here's how to not be isolated in an environment where you are new.
1) Find out about the social hierarchy within the environment.
Here you know who is more likely trying to hold his power on his environment. I mean this is what people do when their power is loss and they become desperate and use cheap tactics.
2) Make allies
Get to know people there. Talk to them, Establish an early friendly vibe.
3) Treat everyone equally if in the same setting, at first (because you don't have their trust yet)
I am sure there are people who are cooler than others but people just can't stand looking at you trying to get along with someone who is cool. It's like running straight for the ice cream bar.
The Cool guy might be forced into talking with you. Not saying he can't but help him maintain his image. and he wants someone on level with him. He already have people supplicating to him, and that hasn't include non-attractive girls, friends, hot girls, practically everyone. You also be a lot less likely to get your a$$ kicked or backstab, bad-mouthing by things that can be avoided.
You can always blend with the crowd, but stand out.
People want you to follow that "imaginary stairs of hierarchy bullshit" where you need to climb the staircase and yada yada. It just doesn't exist, but entertain them if it's a really "into environment".
4) Draw a line, Be neutral when people start trying to test
Negative people, Jealous guys, People who want success but is negative at you the first time, Women who start getting nervous. You get this sometimes.
5) IF you not in a position of power with people or in a place like setting, Don't try to be Hero.
I know this advice differs from MonsierLabrie, but i am the kind of guy who's been othered many times. I have been there, and i can say guys who are ultra successful with women knows this too. I try to solve people problems. and i got othered, because i have no power.
and even if i have power, i wouldn't want to. It's rewarding effort to be promote negativism. I hope this post will elevate people.
Enjoy,
Zac
