I usually just playfully evade the question "Why do you wanna know?" "What do you think it is" etc. But I would like to know if there is a better way to answer this question. Maybe it's situational i.e. (i) if you number is higher, (ii) if it's similar, (iii) if it's lower.

Girls will tell you what they think you are. Whatever it is, it's usually a safe bet if they already like you.
The only time it is not a safe bet is if they are in auto-rejection and ask you this. In that case, take whatever number they say and cut it in half (or quarters, if the auto-rejection is especially bad).
If you don't want to fib, then tell her you hate the idea of numbers and have made a conscious effort to spend zero time reliving the past or recording the past. So your number is not CRAZY high or anything, but because you've actively disallowed yourself from counting lovers you aren't sure what it is. Nor do you care to know, nor want to.
You can also just tell them the number, consequences be damned.
But there are consequences. If your number is high, she will never trust you for monogamy and you will hear about it forever (years and years later).
