This is a story that happened last week, which pissed me off a lot, but I want to know if someone has suggestions about how I could have handled it differently. So here goes:
Last Friday at a party, a Colombian girl, who barely speaks English, was in Paris for the weekend, and came to the party with my Colombian friends. We managed to talk for a bit, she seemed interested and available, but then she sat next to another Colombian and was talking to him the rest of the night. They were sitting in an isolated rather than inviting way. Even as she we leaving with them she looked at me with what I saw as interest. Later on I run into that guy, he asks me why I didn't continue to talk to her during the party. I was like are you kidding me? You were sitting in your corner speaking Spanish it wasn't particularly inviting. He then told me that I was wrong, that he has a girlfriend and that he was talking to her because she doesn't speak French, and that he was basically accompanying her during her visit because she doesn't speak the language. He also said "Man she was available, and she seemed interested in you!". This pissed me off real bad.
At one point during the party as she was returning from the bar to sit next to him I pulled her by the hand and told her to come with me a bit further from them, but still quite close. We had a good conversation in English/Spanish but then it died down and suddenly she was sitting next to him.
How would you have handled this situation? They were basically sitting together talking in Spanish all night, and in places where I can't sit down with them if I wanted to. And given the language barrier (I can barely form a few sentences in Spanish), I felt there was no smooth way to go over there, join the conversation and pull her away. So I just let it go.
