I'm not sure if "appropriate" is the right word, but it can be "acceptable." Whenever I chat with a girl, I always try to gauge her style first though. Don't drop expletives right off the bat, but if she happens to drop one herself (or you overhear her and her friends dropping them), then dropping one or two in your conversation at "appropriate" times can help set the vibe that you are laid back and not picky about your conversation.
Of course, if the girl is heavily religious or extremely conservative, it's more unlikely that she'll use an expletives. In these cases, I would avoid using any if at all possible.
Also, if you choose to use them, make absolutely sure you are comfortable using them. If you are using swear words uncomfortably, people tend to notice, and it becomes more awkward than anything. So make sure you are comfortable with the way you like to talk.

I always enjoy adding a "shit" somewhere in the conversation after meeting a new person just to see how they will react. It's quite informative, and it's extremely funny when you get a repressed conservative girl who suddenly realizes that you don't care if she uses expletives. She'll start dropping them everywhere. It's like Jessica from True Blood when she first learns how to curse. It's the funniest thing ever.
The important thing is to make sure that you use expletives wisely. Don't use them excessively, but when you do use them, don't be apologetic about it.

It's "ok" in some circumstances but you really have to calibrate it to the person or situation.
Sometimes if a girl drops something into a sentence first at least I know she's ok with it, I wouldn't be impressed if she over did it though myself, so I don't do it either.
But you have to be careful what words you use, some are more ok than others and also the tone of it.
It has to be lighthearted. It also has to "fit" you... like, a really "nice" guy suddenly bursting out in expletives isn't good.
But in general I think a well rounded guy doesn't need to curse but isn't offended or affected by them either.
I'm Irish and if you ever hear a bunch of Irish guys chat together there's 5 curse words in every sentence. It's more acceptable... like we say "feck" instead of "fuck" and "shite" instead of "shit".
Often you might even great a friend by calling him a "fecker" or a "bollocks", even women curse more.
But since people curse more it looses some of it's effect as being offensive unless someone really appears forceful or aggressive in saying it.
Since moving to the States I had to pull it waaaaaaaay back as it's just not as acceptable here. Even saying "fuck" in a light hearted way can come off offensive if the person isn't absolutely sure how you meant it.
I think, the point is... be non-reactive to it. James Bond doesn't go around cursing every sentence but if it called for it he's also not a prude. I think that sort of gets to my point.
