Like every country, there are places meant for tourism, and places that are not. I do know however that like Sri Lanka and Myanmar, Madagascar is a large gemstone producing country. Many, many poor people work in the mines looking for sapphires and with any dubious trade comes the risk of getting caught up in smuggling and some pretty bad characters that will kill you. That being said Madagascar is still a great place to visit, just know where you’re going. Heck, you may even want to visit the mining districts, it’s by no means a guaranteed death sentence. You just have to be careful is all.
