The emoticons didn't get pasted.
She added two winks on the BF part and busy part which together with the fact that she replied only a couple of minutes later made me think wasn't a total refusal.

So my idea was "I'll try to be the one being most dismissive and let's see if she re-engages".

My only doubt was if it might have been better to leave the door a bit more open instead with something like "cool, lemme know when you're free then and let's see what happens".

Leaving out the "I usually try" part of your last text would have helped in this case. The winks may just be her harmlessly flirting too, depends how her relationship with her bf is?

What do you think is the problem with it?

Too belittling?

For me it could have conveyed an image of "adventurer asshole" that might have aroused curiosity and she might have (possibly) had an interest in meeting (or keep engaging).

I couldn't see many other ways to change the situation with a short text when "she's gonna be busy anyway in the next weeks".

Too belittling of yourself. If you say you always "try," then it sounds like you never succeed. So that's probably the part that is too belittling.

If it makes you feel better, it sounds like it was a lost cause anyway. She immediately brought up her boyfriend on the first text, so I think she was just harmlessly brushing you off. Some guys mistake this as her leading you on (especially if she throws in winks), but in reality, she's probably just showing that she appreciates the compliment of asking her out as well as trying not to let you down too hard.

On to the next one. =)

Going off of what Franco said, always trying ignores the law of least effort as well.

Dammit, you're also right.
In my mind it was sounding more like I remembered about the BF but that in my experience it was worth a try (hidden message: it wouldn't have been the first time a "taken" girl had been out with me) but your interpretation might make more sense for the receiver.

I guess I was hoping against hope on this one a bit too much as she was one of the perfect target girls I rarely see around, but yeah, on to the next :)

Thanks for feedback all! :)
