OR Mall, Girl Was Engaged

I dropped off an application for work at Hot Topic at the mall today and came across an energetic blonde opportunity in H&M. Her mom was with her, so I walked up and said to the mom:
"Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but I couldn't help but notice how attractive your daughter is. *Smiled at the daughter* I was wondering if, with your permission, I could have a few minutes with her?"
The daughter was visibly taken by surprise but the mom seemed cool and collected. She looked at the daughter, and the daughter looked back, so I turned to the daughter and said smiling,
"With your permission too of course."
The mom then explained to me that the two were on a mission to find her a dress for her engagement party, so we said our goodbyes, and then I went. I think next time I ought to be a little more social, if anything, just for the experience.
I'm liking this style of approach though, and I will definitely do this more often.

I highly doubt asking the parents permission is the way to do it. You should start by talking to either one of them with situational opener and progress to obtaining the girls number

Thanks for the input! Currently I'm trying to learn direct approach better since I've had no luck with them as of lately. Right now my priority is learning direct approaches and getting numbers has taken a backseat. I've had success with situational, but I still want to learn direct.

Quite currently I've just been directly approaching the girl and introducing myself to the mom soon after. Though I might still ask for permission from dads, I got in trouble recently for mistaking a boyfriend for a girl's dad.

Worst that can happen is that I'll have a funny story to tell afterwards.
