Hi Guys,

We, Men are more jealous of sexual infidelity. And this is true. Because biologically, we don't know who the father is.

For women, it's more to you being the "pillar". Women want you to be there for them. That's why time is so important, because it indicates to women for emotional security.

Check this out. University of Alabama, Men's Jealousy and Women's Jealousy

Zac,

This seemed like an interesting read at first, but then I realized it was based solely on "online" infidelity (not actual intercourse). While the findings are still notable, I still didn't really find anything too surprising about them. Women were (generally) jealous at any act that would hurt their social reputation (and often their feelings) while men were distressed by being not the only lover in a woman's life. This seems about right.

I would like to see a study where it shows men and women rating the following scenarios: how do women feel about a man having intercourse with another woman with no emotional connection versus how do women feel about a man having no sexual intercourse with a woman but having a strong emotional connection. And then, how do men feel about a woman having intercourse with another man with no emotional connection versus how do men feel about a woman having no sexual intercourse with a man while having a strong emotional connection.

I would take out the "online" aspect as I feel that isn't quite as significant and less of a question. Although it could be that the researchers for this study just assume that ACTUAL sexual infidelity is the worst thing... which is exactly why no assumptions should be made and they should run a study on it. =)

Zac,

After choosing a mate, females bear the brunt of child production. Not only does the woman have to produce and carry the baby, in a majority of cultures she remains responsible for raising him or her. Because offspring are at such a high cost for the female, the male’s resource contribution could mean life or death for her and her child, weighing significantly on her fitness potential (Schutzwohl, 2008, 93). If a woman knows or suspects that her husband is being unfaithful, she will be more concerned that he is sharing his resources with another female, rather than making another baby (Schutzwohl, 2008, 93). As a result, for females, emotional infidelity is significantly more vexing than sexual infidelity. In a study done to determine the behavioral differences between men and women in terms of jealousy, researchers found that women were most upset when they found out, or suspected that their mate had given a gift to another woman, closely followed by spending time with another woman, and spending time thinking about another woman (de Weerth, 1993, 271). These are considered the worst offenses because the man is giving away both the monetary resources, and the time that he could be using to support his child. By giving a gift to another woman, the man may not directly take much away from the fitness of his primary mate, but he perpetuates a threat that he may shift all of his resources to another woman, which would be dramatically detrimental to the fitness of his primary mate, as well as her child. In the same study, women also self-reported more overall jealousy in relationships than men did. This is likely due to the parental investment costs that females incur – females have more to lose with an unfaithful spouse (de Weerth, 1993, 266-268).

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for linking this. Interesting to think that a woman would tend to overlook sexual infidelity much more than emotional infidelity. In general, I'm guessing it's because a lot of men who have sex with another woman tend to develop feelings for her as well (if they continue to see her after their first sexual encounter).

Franco,

I think so too, but it's more to investment, emotional validation that women need. It's amazing research that i look to read more.
