People's emotions tend to belong into four categories.

Specifically Positive,
Generally Positive,
Generally Negative,
Specifically Negative,

Now the top and bottom are the most extremes. Given an example, when you a guy who is energetic and you enter a really shitty environment, an National Service as an example. You will totally feel like crap if you a guy who is specifically positive because the essence of the environment is usually Generally negative heading down to Specifically Negative.

So what do you do? You tone down your energy, you be more relax.

Your girlfriend feels like shit, You don't want to say "You create your own reality" when she just lost her job. It's another part of this you being specifically positive and her being specifically negative. Too much emotional gap, that she could not relate.

Another example, Given you move to a new city and people are known to dress in dark colours in certain areas of the city. The areas are known to be dangerous because it's more hood and people are not likely to accept new things. You don't want to get kill because you wear a white shirt. (This is just an example, i can't think of such places, lolx)

Your emotions are always moving up and down. Different places, Different rules. It is always about other people. But you can always choose not to give it to them sometimes. :)

This directly relates to Chases recent article on emotional contagion, and by using its principles you can move people up and down that scale.
