I’ve been opening up with variations of this line:
I was looking for something that was shorter than the typical “i saw you standing here and i had to say hi” and “you caught my eye" is what I came up with. Not only is it shorter, but it has a better subcontext too: it conveys that you are the one who is selecting her, not the other way around.
Calling girls cute is framing them as submissive. And using a simile to compare their cuteness to a small harmless animal is not only framing them as submissive, but it is also slightly polarizing as well. I’ve used “little watermelon” as a substitute and it really gets them laughing.
i add in the, “your hair…the earrings…everything!” [what i actually compliment her on depends on the girl, obviously) spiel for 2 reasons 1) it makes the compliment more specific to the girl, and thus makes the approach seem more random 2) it allows girls to start investing, usually they'll start telling me about whatever i complimented them on.
This opener will get you through the first little chunk of any interaction, especially if you're using pauses and otherwise giving her room to reply to each part.
