I've been working on my fundamentals for a while (growing facial hair, working out regularly and now getting my hair cut), and i'm unsure about this.
I don't know why, but my hair (loose curls) gets very dry in this English climate, and hence gets very bushy. So it's hard for me to come up with a specific hairstyle, and I have to use quite a bit of gel when i style my hair to lock in the moisture. This is a shame because this makes my hair rock hard, and not pleasant for a girl to touch (I assume).

So these are the two hairstyles i have tried:
• My old one (the picture on the right. I took that photo yesterday). This looked a bit messy and wild, especially when it was longer. So i thought of geetting something neater.
• My new one (the picture on the left. I took that photo a few hours ago).

Which do you think is better? Or could you suggest something better? Thank you

I think you look much better in the picture on the right, looks more rugged and dominant. Nice facial hair too

To pull off slicked back hair I think you need to make the top have more volume or maybe have a few curls coming down.

Have you tried washing your hair only once or twice a week and then trying to style it with only water? Works great for me and I think it would stop your hair from drying out (keeps natural oils)

you miss 100% of the shots you don't take

Thanks. Just trying to experiment with my hair- it certainly isn't easy!

Won't prolonging washing cause oily hair and dandruff? When you mean no washing, do you mean no shampoo? or no water? (i.e. wear a shower cap?)

I know the feeling, it took me months to get great hair.

The idea is that keeping more of the natural oils and whatnot of hair makes the hair more manageable and look better, how often you wash and whether you use shampoo depends on what you want from your hair and how your hair behaves. Washing with warm water gets rid of a little bit of oil, shampoo gets rid of a medium to large amount depending on how much you use. I found that washing twice a week with a small/medium amount of shampoo is best for me. I use anti-dandruff shampoo (even though I never had dandruff since I was 10).

Whether you get dandruff and how oily your hair gets depends mostly on your hair. From what I hear, it might take a little while for your hair to adjust its oil levels when you stop shampooing as often. Until recently, people rarely washed their hair and its not like they carried around a slimy, oil drenched thing with dandruff on their heads 24/7.

As for dandruff, I once went 2 weeks without any sort of washing. My hair got oily and too stiff, but still no dandruff.

You might find the Wikipedia article on "No Poo" useful- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_poo

The only way I've found to manage my hair is with this, and it happened to also be the easiest way. I only take 2-3 showers a week and nobody knows hehehe

btw, I usually get 2-3 compliments a week for my hair so I'm not making this stuff up (at least not most of it)

I remember there was a no-poo (or something like that) craze going on 1 or 2 years ago. The idea was that hair, especially curly and wavy (i have loose curls), are very vulnerable to shampoo, and there was no need for it. So i stopped for a whole month, only washing my hair with cold water (hot water damages the hair).

Maybe my hair would have improved, but after 2 weeks, i suffered from SERIOUS dandruff. I was scratching my head all the time, and it felt like sand particles were irritating my scalp. My shoulders didn't look too great with lots of the white stuff falling out. Even so, my hair was VERY greasy. But once every week, my hair would look perfect. Which was odd.

I stuck with it for a whole month, and then i just couldn't take it anymore and scrubbed really thoroughly using a good shampoo and conditioner. It took a few washes, but it went back to normal soon after.
