Matt,
This will go against the grain, but you should "fake it until you make it." In other words, use your best judgment to come across as someone who knows what he's doing and see if it gets you success.
Now the only thing you'll WANT to do is take note of whether or not what you tried actually WORKED. If it worked, then try it again and again and see if your success rate remains high with it. If it does, then there's no reason to not keep using it. After awhile, what you were faking actually becomes what you actually just do, and then it's no longer faking it.
Likewise, if what you tried failed, then take note of that and decide whether or not you should try it a few more times to see if you just executed it incorrectly. But always being taking note of whether or not you are succeeding or failing each time you try something so that you are becoming more and more aware of what actually works (for you) and what doesn't.
