In past months I have been thinking that I have goals but not really a path
I am a couple years away from approaching my late 20s and I have been working the white collar 40 hr workweek type of 9 to 5. The work is in a field that I feel I have the talent for but deep down inside I have always wanted to be a part of the nightlife lifestyle, mainly through bartending at a hot nightclub or bar hot girls and cool kids gather at. If I do not do this I feel like I have lived an unfulfilled life, see the clock ticking fast on this. I know opportunities to work in nightlife will not be there when I am over 30.
In the field I am currently in, we don’t get any naturals and players even though I genuinely love the work. You also cannot have a resume flooded with unemployment gaps for a long time either and I recently got a job offer in NYC. The pay is also very good as well as health benefits, 401k and such.
So I have two choices here, which makes more sense.
1. Do my white collar work full time and then on weekends or when I am not working, look for work at bars and places that interest me. The issue I have encountered is that a lot of bars seem to want full timers starting out because weekend shifts go to experienced guys. Don’t even seem lenient on barback roles but maybe NYC is a bit different. My natural state is active and I get bored on most weekends anyways, even hobbies aren’t fulfilling to me unless it is this one of working in nightlife. I also wonder if I will have the time to enjoy the benefits of it having 2 jobs now if it all works out.
2. Quit a current career, throw away those years, potentially risk future career potential in white collar world, and go all in on bartending and nightlife to where I make it my full time job. The cons here are pretty obvious regarding my career trajectory.
