Do you think you need same experiences to relate and build rapport with people?
I think it's definitely helpful, but you don't really need.
If you show interested and/or can related with similar stories in different fields that gave you a same feeling than you don't really need the same experiences.
Example:
you talk to a rave-goer that tells you how she loved taking E and dancing till morning because of the feeling of total freedom and peace and interconnectedness that gives her.
You never took E and never liked dancing till morning.
But provided you're actually interested in talking, you show your interest with further questions and keep the conversation going. She might say her parents never cared what she was doing (and you might have have the same here, or find stronger connections in some other sub-stories).
You then relate by saying that even though you don't like taking drugs, you totally get her and you always dance in your room and you loved so much when you also felt so peaceful and connected with the world when you were on that mountain top etc. etc.
