Okay, I've been playing around with this a bit.
I don't like it in head-on approach. By the time you're done, she's looking at you like "Are you quite finished?" and then rolls her eyes or looks away, and you've lost the opportunity. For head-on, I prefer the "into-the-blue" method I described above.
But if you're approaching from behind, it's perfect. Generally I don't like chasing after a girl and catching up from behind... you're too liable to startle her if you open too early, and if you draw parallel and hang around too long, the moment is gone and it can feel weird... timing is tricky.
I've been experimenting with this, though, and it falls naturally into place. You know the situation when there's a girl in front with perfect legs or ass? So just as you draw level, you start looking at her ankles, then move up (really obviously) to the calves, knees, thighs, hips, waist, breasts... you get the idea. Once you raise your eyes as far as her face, she's looking at you curiously; you merely smile and say hi.
Tried it twice today and got a smile, "hello" and encouraging eye contact. The first was married (spotted her ring on my "way up"!), the second I somehow missed the moment because I wasn't expecting it to work. Next step is for me to open right after doing this. I like it
