This morning at Starbucks I ordered a coffee and a Sandwich. Paid and used the restroom. As I waited a 30 year old tall attractive girl came and stood next to me, much closer than most strangers would in an uncrowded coffee shop. (our elbows were nearly touching). I noticed a thin silver band on her ring finger.

I opened indirectly: Well it's peppermint mocha season again. Guess it is time to break my "Coffee black and Whiskey straight rule" (I'd seen her get a black coffee before).

She replied: "oh yes, I can't drink regular coffee any more" Seemed to hook.

I remarked on how our tastes change as we get older and she told a story about the smell of roasted beans smelling bad to her as a child and I related a story of my grade school teacher who smelled of cigarettes and coffee.

Just then the Barista called out "coffee for Rocky!" and I abandoned my plans to ask her about the silver band.
As I turned to leave I gave her a smile and said "Bye now". She returned my eye contact and a smile and I immediately regretted not deep diving her about the band.

As I left she was getting in a Volkswagon 4 door with a guy in the passenger seat.

I gotta get to the name exchange faster.

the right date makes getting her back home a piece of cake

Rocky-

Quick note on these situations where you aren't sure how much time you have with the girl. An easy question to ask is, "Drinking here or getting one for the road?"

Does two things for you:

  • Lets you know how much time with her you've got
  • Gives you an easy transition into swapping numbers if she's about to leave

If she says she's just picking up a coffee and jetting, then you just try and jam in as much quick banter as you can, then trade numbers with her and let her leave. Usually better if you know she'll be leaving quickly if you're the one hanging around and she leaves the building, I find. Seems to be the contrast between her being pressed for time and not in control of her schedule and you being someone who apparently can take it easy. You can always just stand around and sip your coffee and take off a minute after she's left.
