The 'are you single?' opening...

'Hey, i wanna ask you something...'
'Okaay...'
'Are you single?'
'No. I have a boyfriend.'
...

I thought i'd try this out today. This happened everytime! (I tried it out only twice to be fair, but i quickly got sick of it).

This is a very good test on your fundementals. If she says no, then she doesn't like you, end of story, and you must bow out gracefully (i tried continuing anyway, you just go in circles as she doesn't give you anything). From this, you know you need to improve your fundementals.
If she says yes, then it gives you the confidence to keep going.

But as a general opener. I'm not so sure. All it does is give her only a split-second judgement to make a decision about you, which isn't enough if you're not a handsome guy with amazing fundementals. What do you guys think?

And i'm just supposing here, but surely a sexy, charismatic man won't care at all whether a pretty girl has a boyfriend or not, but will just go for her anyway?

I use it all the time, I never start with it though. I ask after a few lines of banter and have never got a bad reaction yet. I don't like chicks with boyfriends so that's why I always ask.

Remember that Ricardus is the guy who holds his hand out and says STOP! to girls, and then proceeds to take them to bed direct from the street, so for those of us who can't quite muster up that level of presence just yet, I'm not sure this is the easiest opener to pull off
