2 girls. 1 pretty, 1 not. how to act/approach?

This is another classic...
Just came from the club and had this same situation that I guess everyone had a billion times before.
I was introduced to these 2 girls by a friend of mine and then he kinda dissapeared. fine.. It happens that 1 was good looking and her friend.. sorry, Nature, but she was not. So, I clearly noticed that I put lots of attention on the pretty one and her friend was kinda abandoned next to her the whole time. I introduced myself to both of them, was nice etc, but I put much more attention on the pretty one as I said. Later I had to go away, when I came back they werent there, later I saw the pretty one making out with some dude, bla bla, but it doesn't really matter. What matters is:

What should I do in these cases to earn the pretty one's graces? I mean, should I put more attention on the ugly one, so the pretty one assumes I am a decent dude? But what if she thinks that I am into her ugly friend that never gets laid and she decides to let us d our thing? (that I am not interested in) Or should I try to involve them both into the conversation and then slowly move into the pretty one? What are your thoughts on this?
2nd Question, Imagine I am approaching the same 2 girls for the first time. Who should I speak to first, etc? Is it better done with a buddy wingman that will entertain the ugly one?

Follow the 70/30 rule, give 70% of your attention to the pretty girl, and 30% to the ugly one. I've been talking to groups of girls lately at the mall and what not, and I give general small talk to the group, and maintain real conversations with the group leader and attractive girl, however, since there are only two of them, treat the beautiful girl as the group leader. Don't run any explicit sex game, be as implicit as possible with sex/attraction, win over the ugly girl first or she will likely cockblock you.

One important thing I want to add is that when you are talking to the girl you are not interested in, you should use your non-verbal touching with the one you like. Keep escalating while you are talking to the friend. You are having a conversation with the one you don't like and at the same time the other girl and you are having a non-verbal communication. This type of communication is so hot for girls. It's a secret between you and her. Sexy.
