Any ideas on an affordable leather jacket? I know that it's gonna be somewhat expensive, but I don't have tons of money to blow right now

Buckle can also be a good place to find a sharp jacket. I just bought one from there for $80 and it feels like real leather, has a nice cut, a great fit, and a zip off hood to boot.

Hey guys,
I discovered Fashion Beans a few nights ago and it's sorted out a lot of stuff for me. It's pretty high priced stuff - with good quality of course! Although it's easy to take the authors taste and suit it to your budget and taste. I might be a bit slow for finding this site only now, but I live out of the UK. :)

The choice for men especially if you are in the States is pretty bad.
In the UK it's a lot better.

Having said that, places like H&M and Jack&Jones and Zara are great.
They aren't overly expensive and in the States they sell more of the European style... i.e. stylish casual and fitted.

American guys tend to go for big over-sized things, overly casual and a lot of sportswear for the local teams.

I'm not a big proponent of "peacocking" in the PUA sense. I think it looks ridiculous, and while a flashing LED belt might make some of the girls pay attention to it, I find it's ore of a gimmick, if you meet her for coffee the next day will she really want to be seen with the guy wearing the feather boa? Doubt it.

My style is to dress for the establishment you are going to but BETTER. Recently I bought 2 "sportscoats"/blazers from H&M and they go with everything. You can dress it up with a dress shirt, keep is casual with a casual shirt or just rock a v-neck under it for a really casual yet stylish look. It's cheap, it's simple, it stands out but guys just don't do it in most places here.

Think of Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love and when he is dressing up Steve Carrell. Carrell is dressed "ok" for the bar, but Gosling shows him that what he's wearing is not the right fit, and not the right combination of style and goes about fixing it. That is what you need really I think.
Stand out for how well dressed and stylish you are, not outragious. That's my take on it anyway.

The key is wearing things that are fitted. If you are slim, it makes you look incredibly fashion savvy.
If you are a big guy, then I would go for slim fitting but layered. Don't try to hide your body under bulky clothes, it just makes you look even bigger. Fitted makes you appear more confident in yourself as a big guy but the layers and choice of colours can easily hide anything you are worried about.

Just my take,
best of luck guys!
E.

Re: STICKIED: Affordable fashion?

Estate,

Good observations, and I think we have a similar fashion sense. The thing I want to point out is, if you're "peacocking" it doesn't have to be tacky. Different people find different things tacky, albeit, I feel that most people would be a bit hesitant to rock a feather boa!

That being said, if you go to say, a local flea market or mall, you can find a cool ring, pendant, or bracelet that will take your outfit to the next level. Yes a sportcoat/blazer is stylish. You want to make sure that it isn't too long, especially if you are short. You want to be aware of fabrics, patterns, cuts of pants, cuffs, how many buttons to undo on a dress shirt, matching your belt to your shoes, which shoes to buy, etc. There are A LOT of things that guys don't realize about fashion, and even if they do realize it, a lot of people are lazy, and don't have the confidence to want to stand out. Yes you can standout for sure, especially in the States, if you wear well-fitted, designer clothing. It doesn't even have to be designer, sometimes you are just paying for the name! That being said, sometimes you need and should want to do more than simply dress well...

I've been to the States, and I live in Canada. Up north where I live, people tend to dress better than the majority of Americans, but of course there are exceptions; people dress differently in different places, and I'm simply basing my views on my observations. That being said, if you live in a place like LA or New York where people are known to dress well and take care of themselves, you have to do MORE to stand out. That's why I advocate looking for some cool jewellery, chains, bracelets, pendants, boots, or any unique accessories that you feel comfortable wearing. When you learn more about fashion you'll know what you can get away with and where the line is between fashion forward and whether you're coming off as tryhard. Personally, I don't wear a fedora, and I see a lot of guys wearing them my age (19), but it looks a bit... off to me. That being said, some clothing looks better on certain people. Look at the rapper, Neyo. That guy was made to rock a fedora in my opinion so again, some guys it looks great with certain accessories/clothes, and others, it doesn't. It's good to develop an eye for what looks good on you, and you can accomplish that by asking girls in the store, or friends/family how it looks on you to get a more refined opinion. Eventually you'll get to a point where you go to a store looking for clothes that are different. I have a ton of clothes, so now I'm looking for some cool jackets from Guess, a pair of Frye boots, and some cool pendants! Not only that, but eventually you get to a point where, you will only go out wearing a well put together outfit. You'll never catch me dressed sloppily going out, unless I'm going to play soccer with friends. The reason being, I've gotten to a point where I need to dress well to feel confident, and if I don't I'll feel off. So guys, keep advancing your wardrobe and you'll keep getting more looks ;)!

Cheers,
Garrett

Re: STICKIED: Affordable fashion?

I'm having a lot of trouble finding good, fashionable shoes (even after reading all the fashion threads on the forums). I wear very nice vans most of the time (they're actually very fancy, a lot of people often mistake them for dress shoes and I get a lot of compliments on them!) and some cheap black leather oxfords I got back in high school when I need something fancier (job interviews, going to classier clubs, they look "nice" but hardly stand out, I just don't feel "awesome" when I wear them). I'm looking for something a bit fancier, possibly boots. I will also add that I love zippers but don't particularly care for boots that have a long shaft (I'd prefer something that goes no higher than the ankle). Any advice?

I honestly don't even know what's a good price on shoes...

I was looking at these on aldo and considering buying them (they're actually A LOT nicer in person):

In general, I buy my shoes at Buckle. they are one of the few items that they carry at super reasonable prices even when not on sale, and they are usually very stylish. They aren't going to last you for decades like certain brands will, but they aren't as expensive as those brands either. While I generally stay away from casual/dress shoe hybrids, I did find one shoe by Sketchers that was absolutely fantastic (http://www.skechers.com/style/61779/dia ... eisman/blk). I wore these almost exclusively for over a year until they wore out, and they are really nice. As for boots, I don't really wear those, but I did almost buy a pair of ankle length boots at Buckle that could work for casual, and more dressy occasions depending on whether you folded the sides down.

Re: STICKIED: Affordable fashion?

I'll admit to having bought cool shoes from ebay.

The reason being is that you can buy some pretty cool styles on there if you keep watching and get some good deals.
Buy new obviously... not someone's old trainers.

One problem I have with shoes is that I've bought from places like Aldo before but for the price the quality is aweful. They really don't hold their shape and certainly don't hold up more than a few months in New England weather without looking worn and scratched and torn. So it's hard to justify to price if they are going to get much wear.

If you have a Marshalls in town I also recommend them... like ebay, you need to keep going back to find bargains and nice shoes (a lot are crap) but you'll be rewarded if you do.

Shoes obviously can make or break and outfit. Some people recommend paying a lot for really good quality... there is some merit in that but shoes wear out quickly especially if you wear them a lot of the weather is harsh where you live.
For that reason I look for bargains and expect to replace them in a few months.
Shopping online also lets you seek out deals and find some funky styles which aren't in your local shops.

Give it a shot.!

Re: STICKIED: Affordable fashion?

I was looking for a nice pair of shoes just a couple of days ago. I ended up picking up a pair at The Walking Company. Yes, they are a bit more pricey, but they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. They also have a 1-year guarantee and are quite stylish. You can just pick up their shoes and immediately feel the difference in material.

Shoes are something I recommend spending a little bit more money on. They will last longer, your feet will thank you, and you will have a little extra touch to stand out from the crowd.

Just my 0.2cents

Eh, Depends on the look you're going for. I would honestly tell you to look for something a bit more rugged looking. That jacket is good, but it looks super generic. If it's faux leather, its also not going to look, feel, or smell right. It's worth it to spend a bit more money to get a nice leather jacket. I got mine for $80 and it turns out that it actually IS real leather. You don't have to break the bank, but it is something to keep in mind. Here's a pic.

I think the cut of it is pretty good. It would look good if you layer it a bit.

Having said that, leather is very hit and miss... it's not exactly very fashionable nowadays. It's good for a casual look if that's what you're going for but I think leather jackets going out to a bar or club look a bit tryhard and unfashionable.

Hey Think,

Where'd you get that from? It looks pretty cool and $80 isn't too bad

It's from Buckle. They normally are fairly pricey, at least compared to places like American Eagle, Hollister, etc, but they have a few items which are really reasonable, and their jackets are one of those items. They also have really good prices on shoes and accessories, if you are in the market for that.

I got mine in store. They don't actually have it listed online. I originally bought the one you linked to. It looks cool, but it feels and smells really weird, which is why I returned it.

Re: STICKIED: Affordable fashion?

I just got a really good deal at Belk. They had this leather look-a-like jacket on sale for $54 and it looks great with my jeans. Looks great with a shirt and tie, too. Most of their other stuff looks a little too old fashioned for me, though, which is where Macy's comes in. If you find something you really like, they'll eventually have a good sale on it. All it takes is a little bit of patience.

Just went to Khols to pick up some stuff that I forgot while out of town, and they actually have some decent stuff for really good prices. Now, it's nothing to write home about, but I got a really nice looking fitted dress shirt for $10, and they have great clearance sales all the time. Their V-necks are a steal right now too.
