How does one start reading Confucius? What books does one begin with? I am at the university of california san diego library and luckily have that at my disposal.

Start with The Analects. Whichever translation you prefer most.

If it's too difficult or you want to understand it better, supplement it with an introductory Eastern/Asian Philosophy book
like "A Guide to Asian Philosophy Classics" or the like.

Here's also a good article about his philosophy to begin with: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/confucius/

I did a fair bit of research before picking up a translation, and what I kept hearing was David R. Schiller's was the most faithful to Confucius's original intent.

Schiller ended up being a perfect fit for me, and I'd recommend his translation to anyone who enjoys the material from this site. He uses copious references to neuroscience, statecraft, deliberate practice, as well as contrasts with Western philosophers (Aristotle, Plato), to get Confucius's message across. He also cites other translators' interpretations where there is any conflict, as well as his rationale for his interpretation if it differs from others. Makes for a very complete (if wordy) couple of volumes.
