I went grocery shopping and saw a nice blonde girl working at the liquor shop (which is right across from the grocery shop). She had lots of tattoos but beautiful bright blonde hair and a cute face. I decided to get some drinks. As I was at the checkout register, the girl very obviously threw her hair in front of her, then back up. I told her "fixing your hair?" in a relaxed voice. She said "yeah, I just had it cut so I am still getting used to it". I said "oh, you used to have it this long or so?", indicating with my hands some arbitrary length. Then she said "yeah, it used to be longer. I got dumped today and then I went to the barber's". I said "dumped? Oh no, that must be a shitty day for you". She said "yeah" or something and continued with the payment. I did notice some strange expressions on her face. It looked a bit like frustration.
I think if I had said something smoother like "who on earth is so dumb to dump you?" or "if you like I can take your mind off it", or "you can always cry on my shoulder". Remember, flirting is not a guaranteed thing that always works, but if you never try you won't ever succeed! And in this case, think about it: why would she basically blatantly tell a random but cute guy that she's available? That's right, because she likes said cute guy
In short: I have my fundamentals down and am able to talk to women in a relaxed non-needy way, especially if it's a functional thing where you have to talk to them anyway. I just need to find a way to be more relaxed and quicker on my feet. And more ballsy at expressing my interest.
