We all know that alcohol is very bad for you if you are trying to get into shape as a guy but I have an issue in that when I go to a bar, I feel obliged to least have a couple of drinks. For one, the bars in my city are not that big and I do want to build a good rapport with the bartenders by tipping them when I get a drink.

The problem is I don't really know what are safe drinks to get that won't do too much damage to my body in regards to carbs and making my stomach bloat.

Water tends to be free and so do sodas on their own. The bars are go to are more college type 20 something oriented so nothing fancy and upscale.

What are some decent go to drinks to get in this situation? I know alcohol in general is not good for those trying to lose weight or get fit.

Found this source. Normally can't stand Men's Fitness because it's clickbait garbage, but there's a bit of science behind this one. I'll summarize the good bits:
  • Stay clear of anything with mixers, especially the cheap pre-packaged ones loaded with sugar.
  • A glass of champagne has the lowest amount of calories per serving (96 cal per 5 oz). Except certain light beers.
  • Drinking something you're not normally a fan of is a good way to limit your intake - unless you just like drinking; I know an alcoholic who tried that and ended up getting wrecked on a box of Chardonnay.
  • Avoid craft beers. They're delicious but super high in calories and carbs. Light beers are better for you but they're gross and you have to drink a few to get a buzz.

I'd recommend a shot of any 80-proof spirit. It's relatively low in calories, but most are carbs and you've got to have a palate for straight liquor to enjoy it.

A few contributions of my own:
  • Buy a girl a drink. I hate to say it - and only do it myself if we're taking turns buying rounds - but it'll keep the carbs out of you and the bartender will get his tip. If you're not a fan of that kind of investment, you could do the same for a buddy or a regular you know and build the same rapport - or better in some cases.
  • Don't drink soda either. Nutritionally, they're worse for you than any alcoholic beverage unless it has soda as a mixer. And they're all carbs. Club soda or even tonic water would be better for you, and they're usually free.
  • Buy something else or just tip for the water. I know a few people who sit at my bar and order one drink or get water with some appetizer and leave a few bucks anyway. As long as you tip for the service, the bartender will be cool. Plus, you'll be the interesting patron that doesn't drink. That's more memorable than any other regular who orders three beers and tips 20%.

A very simple solution for you bro, this has saved my wallet and my liver. Get this drink:
Sprite, a dash of coke, lime, and a cocktail straw. Most places it's free, maximum 2$. Tip if you want. But its a way healthier alternative than drinks. Plus the coke makes it look like cocktail

Tipping a bartender for a water or soda really sets you apart if you want to avoid alcohol. Throw in a lime or lemon and no one is the wiser. That is usually my Late night approach, especially when driving.

When you guys say 80 proof spirit, that means anything like say 80 proof vodka or 80 proof rum right?

Yep. Difference between spirits and liqueurs is the latter is sweetened after distilling, so they've got more sugar and shit.

Tequila soda is my go-to for this reason.

Tequila has some health benefits from the agave (although, booze is booze), soda water doesn't have calories, and the drink itself is quite bitter, so you're not very tempted to drink it quickly.

In Australia we do not tip unless we want to, however a soda water costs the same as a lemonade or a Coke. Soda water is what I used to drink when I was hitting nightgame hard. You absolutely need to stay clear. I suppose later in my seduction career I got a bit lazy and would have a drink or two to get in the mood. This is just the thin edge of the wedge and leads to you wanting MORE drinks to get MORE in the mood. I would reserve alcoholic drinks for when you are "out with the boys" and just want to have a good time, I suppose if you happen to pick up on such occasions then it is a bonus. But if you go out solely with the view of picking up, your results will be 500% better if you do not drink alcohol at all. I think it's partly about just being strong and being the best man you can possibly be -- ignoring peer pressure and just doing your own thing. It makes you feel more confident, quite apart from the fact that you are analyzing the situation better.
cheers, Nick
