I have seen a couple of guys talking recently about being surprised at girls doing things they did in relationships because "they had a lot of green flags."
Green flags are good, but a lot of guys are letting them distract from RED FLAGS
The psychology goes something like this:
"Well, she has some red flags, but those are outweighed by all those gorgeous green flags!"
Let's define some terms:
When you mix RED FLAGS and GREEN FLAGS, what you end up with is BROWN
. It is not the case of "well she's got 15 green flags and only 3 red flags so the green flags win."
Imagine you are buying a car. This car has a lot of green flags:
However, the car has a few red flags:
High risk-tolerance you says "To hell with those red flags! There are green flags in abundance! I'm buying that car!"
I did just such a thing with a car... a beautiful used Mercedes-Benz. Tons of green flags and a few red flags. That car had maintenance problems the entire time I owned it. I paid $12,000 for it and Carfax tried to buy it off me for $1,200 two years later (after I'd put a ton of maintenance money into it! I ended up selling it to some Mexican lady for $4,500, after I had fixed all the problems the car had, when I had to sell it in a hurry).
It pays to be a little risk-averse with your LTR selection. Few people will have as much influence over your life as the women you choose to share it with in any kind of serious capacity.
(you don't need to be as cautious with FWBs/STRs... unless you have a tendency to turn your FWBs/STRs into LTRs... in which case, you should be as cautious with them!)
Just remember: green + red = BROWN.
It does not equal "green with a bit of red fringe."
The colors mix together.
No matter how many wonderful qualities she has, if she also comes with SERIOUS PROBLEMS, those serious problems are serious problems.
A beautiful, sweet, affectionate, womanly, lovely, submissive, feminine, thin, healthy, family-oriented girl with borderline personality disorder and a history of infidelity and vengefulness is still likely to be a bad girlfriend, even if she has "more green flags than red flags." Those green flags don't mean much when she's sucking some other guy off in a hotel room she paid for with money she conned you out of.
GREEN
+ RED
= BROWN

Let's define some terms:
- RED FLAG
: a strong indication that a girl comes with some serious problems for a relationship.
- GREEN FLAG
: a positive quality it is good to have in a girl you have a long-term relationship with.

Imagine you are buying a car. This car has a lot of green flags:
- Powerful engine
- Great gas mileage
- Large gas tank
- Comfortable interior
- Spacious & roomy
- Gorgeous exterior
- Precision handling
- High vehicle safety ratings
- Your favorite car brand & model
- Reasonably priced
However, the car has a few red flags:
- High mileage
- Has been in a serious accident
- Mechanic says the engine mounts are corroded
High risk-tolerance you says "To hell with those red flags! There are green flags in abundance! I'm buying that car!"
