Hector, how do you defeat psychopaths? Especially in corporate settings?

Yo Hector!

Found your article on psychopaths to be quite enlightening and wanted to hear more from you as well as others. My main thing is dealing with psychopaths that can get away socially or in corporate culture with their hands clean. I have always run into the type of psychopaths and scumbags who will point fingers at others for lacking morals while lacking the same morals themselves.

So currently, I think I might be dealing with such a scumbag and want to know how to tactfully put him in his place. Unfortunately, this rotten clown was my boss for my first job out of college and I put in my two weeks notice this past Friday.

The guy is a piece of work to be honest with you, I worked in a business role and he would have daily meetings where he would just whine about Trump, racism, and other things while being racist and nasty himself as he gossiped about others. Since he is half black, he can get away with it too.

This guy is without question a narcissist and although I am happy to have put in my two weeks, I feel like I will be running into this clown again.

He made us share our cell phone numbers amongst the team in order to keep things close and convenient, understandable given the company culture and in case he needs to tell us something but I get another feeling that is off too.

This guy would also play favorites in a big way on the team, he had people he wanted to get ahead and if their numbers were not right, he would talk them up in other ways to get them ahead. We had two black guys on the team with the worst numbers and worst performance too, he talked them up as "great leaders" while putting down the top producer on our team who was a white guy from Spain as being "sketchy" and "dishonest".

I get the feeling that he also used some of coworkers to harass others in order to keep a pecking order. There was one Korean girl on the team he would use to harass this Korean guy who was dating a white girl, often calling him out as being a "twinkie" and "self-hater" and the guy was forced to take it. A few times the guy stuck up for himself, scumbag boss joined in on the attack against him.

But here is my big worry about this psychopath.

I am transitioning into a career at another company and it is in a role that pays well but he failed hardcore in when he was young, so he attempted to talk me out of it when I first started as well as talking me out of it during my time with the company.

Now my fear is this son of a bitch might try to ruin my career moving forward or try to intrude on my life by either probing or getting coworkers (soon to be former) to try and text me, attack me on LinkedIn, or do anything to where I find it difficult to move on from the company even though I have moved on.

Not just that, I think this scumbag is trying to still be involved in my life well after I have moved on from under his shitty wing.

Any advice on what to do in this situation?

Become a sociopath yourself, or at least learn how to turn it on. When dealing with sociopaths, show them no sympathy. Use empathy only but think of them as living robots who only deserve face-value morality, and do your best to never let them know you're consciously manipulating them or try not to dominate them too hard. Use them for whatever they're good for.

If you have to, be their subordinate and learn from them, but don't bring them around girlfriends/girls you like.

Play the game he plays. Talk shit. Subterfuge. Undermine him. Talk bad about him to those who actively dislike him, and try to sow discord with those who do like him or follow him. They only let him get away with it because they fear his wrath.

Problem is, he's your boss so his wrath is legitimate. Learn the rules of firing/hiring and what you can and cannot get away with. Don't openly question him unless he's DIRECTLY insulting, then call him out. "Why are you saying that?" or even tell him he needs to stop talking like that.

Get into an argument. If he starts to appear threatening, remind him that he's just as accountable to HR or a lawsuit as anyone, and if he fires you because of it, then your case is even better.

You could also become friends with someone who is higher up than him and slowly expose who he is to that leader. Fight monsters with monsters, until you become one yourself.

Well he is not my boss anywhere, I quit but the fear I have is that this snake might actually try to ruin my career by actively stalking me company to company. By this I mean trying to get in with my bosses at a new company and starting a smear campaign and things along those lines. The guy is really fucking petty so I can see him doing something like this.

So my question now is how to defend against a petty psychopath with stalker-like tendencies who might try to ruin my career long-term as we are in the same industry even though I am not at the same company.

Well you didn't list him as a reference did you?

Did you have someone tell you he was spreading bad info about you?

How would you feel if someone unsolicited, dished that so and so was a no talent hack? Bet you would see through the jealousy....

But be ready if someone says "you know Joe Ahole was saying you hit on all the women in your department and had bad BO?" You had better be ready to fire back calmly saying "Boy, He really is trying to make me look bad. Wonder what he says about you? I don't concern myself with his opinion of me. He is a loudmouth and a gossip, and that's wone of the reasons I don't work for him anymore."

If only dealing with psychos was this simple.

Waiting to hear what Hector has to say.

From reading your replies to all the help you have been offered on a variety of topics you should change your name to "Yeah But..."

So I have been reflecting a bit guys.

I know I am dealing with a really nasty guy and some nasty coworkers but I got a good job offer today, a really nice one with higher pay and more prestige. No doubt this guy is going to be fuming with envy and former coworkers, even moreso. I sat through meeting after meeting with this guy bragging about how he would ruin careers as coworkers fed him ideas, endless gossip about the entire company too including the CEO.

Now that being said, I have effectively moved on and have a better job now which I have accepted but the issue is, I know I will be seeing this rat in some form. I know that I am in a situation where this rat is actively scheming to ruin me.

Unfortunately, we were forced to give them our cellphone numbers when I worked at my old company and this rat still has it along with the team, I intend to ignore them as soon as I update my linkedin and do this as much as possible. Will be shutting off my cellphone during work for the first couple of months to go all in to learn as much as I can so I can perform well but after that, I am dealing with a schemer who may try to ruin me in other ways.

My hope is to ignore this clown's calls and the texts from him and former sadistic coworkers, maybe he goes away and this thread is just a blip.

But I am thinking if he tries to ruin my reputation with a current manager of mines if I can somehow jump above him in my former company and get higher level people involved.

Obviously it will turn into a war but I do think this clown might need to be stomped on multiple times until he taps. Trying to draw out the various scenarios in which this can play.

Hector

Re-visiting this, he did talk an awful lot of shit about two directors who were above him and I seemed to get along okay with them, although it was more of a meeting them a couple times and having nice convos.

I hate to go there Hector but I think with some people, a couple of hard hits and smacks from higher-ups (in a corporate sense) are needed in order to teach them a lesson.

Now I know this guy is envious that I am going into a role he could never get and have a potential to build a nice career, no doubt he will try to ruin it in anyway he can get away with but if we have to get a lot of bodies in there then so be it. Luckily I have the contact info of a lot of the higher ups and since I no longer report to this clown, I will just get them involved.

in all seriousness....
Does your old company do "exit interviews"? If so this is the time to bring up your coworker's destructive behavior. Getting something on record is important for back up.

Exit interviews are actually done by HR so they can keep it on the file and in case you say anything, they will just try to use it against you in the future. I've done my research there lol.
