How to answer 'What's the situation with you two?'?

Hi guys, sorry for the rookie question but how do you answer when someone asks "what's the deal/what's going on with you and 'chicks name'?" I was a little caught off guard and I felt like I was back in school!

I've seen this guy out and about for about 4 month and occasionally we chat, I didn't know he knew the chick until he asked me about her and what the situation was (I still don't know why he asked this, he was with his girlfriend so I don't think he was checking if he could chat her up, they might be friends?) I said "I don't know, we hang out when we bump into each other" (which is what seemingly happens when we bump into each other) he seemed confused and said "I thought you were together". I actually wonder how many people think we're a couple.

This guy sounds like an acquaintance. You don't owe him anything. However, I understand you want to be polite. I had a guy do this to me once and I waved my hand sideways and the dude interpreted it that me and the girl were fucking. And we were not. This guy went back and told the girl

"Hey, Troy said you and him used to fuck."

And from that day, the girl hated my guts. My advice to you is to be very careful when you share any info. Maybe he wants to smash this girl. Just because he has a girlfriend, does not mean he is loyal to her.

When asked what's the deal

You already slept with her

Say: "we dating"

You have not slept with her

Say: "we are just friends" (it's not a lie. Until a woman has slept with you, it's a friend zone situation)

If he goes on to ask more intrusive questions, redirect the question and ask him why it's such a big deal. Just don't get defensive. If you do, it will be obvious you like this girl and he may try to cockblock or one-up you to smash her first.
