How to be more focused on College?

I hate school. Well, not always. But recently I realized that I hate school and I hate getting there. And all those times I thought I liked it back in High School, it turned out to be a damn lie.

Anyway, I have not been focused on College much recently. After I read Hector's post about how he spent his time in college, I realized that my English degree would be pointless and started thinking "What's the point?"

How do I be more focused on college? More specifically, college work and assignments? I have always had a problem with doing school assignments. I hate doing them, and would wait until the last minute to do them because I'd rather do something else. Mostly it would be TV, the computer, my Kindle, watching porn on my Kindle.

Honestly, I think that in a lot of cases, the degree you choose is less important, and the connections and resume you make is the the biggest component to getting a job after graduation. No degree is pointless, because it shows that you slaved through classes for 4 years which is a display of intelligence and work ethic.

How do I be more focused on college? More specifically, college work and assignments? I have always had a problem with doing school assignments. I hate doing them, and would wait until the last minute to do them because I'd rather do something else. Mostly it would be TV, the computer, my Kindle, watching porn on my Kindle.

Leave your house / apartment / any place you regular or find comfortable.

You must be out of your comfort zone, or else the distractions around you just flood in. Probably won't be watching porn in the library next to some cuties who are studying. I think it also helps if everybody around you is studying.

Another thing is to plan your day / week schedule, at the beginning of the day. Hold your self strict to it, and put in the hours you'll be studying or writing in between shorter breaks. I'm a very busy person and this is the only way I fit everything in.

But I feel you man, there's even times I don't want to study and I'll pop on GC and read articles / forum posts for hours because I'm more passionate about learning seduction than I am learning biology, for instance.

A college degree is a screening tool for employers to assess if you have the wherewithal to follow through with a long term commitment. That's all it shows.

More or less I'd agree with this.

So I graduated college with a 3.92 GPA and I've been through plenty of interviews with heavy hitting companies in the business world and can easily land a mid-high paying business job (I still to this day get about 1 unsolicited job offer in my inbox every week from a random company on LinkedIn). You know what? None of the employers I've ever interviewed with gave a shit about my high GPA. Its a 1-2 minute conversation at best. Not only that but all the info I learned in my specific degree is more or less generalized information is literally inapplicable in the real business world other than a few finance/accounting and biz foundation classes I took.

If I could do it over again I would choose to not focus on college, put in the minimal time to make straight C's, and instead learn real world tangible applicable business skills such as internet marketing, more sales experience, and have started a few more entrepreneurial side projects.

In short if your not passionate about studying put your focus into what your passionate about and do the bare minimum to get your degree.

Skills trump inapplicable knowledge any day.

GPA really only matters if you are going into post-grad study or into some type of job recruitment program that recruits recent college grads for a management track or something along those lines.

That being said, if you think you might want to go to grad school someday you are shooting yourself in the foot if you don't do well.

I'm toying with doing something crazy like trying to get an MBA from Harvard, and its going to be very difficult with my non-stellar GPA

Sometimes it is not what you really like, it is more about what you dislike...

I never cared about school. Let me correct myself - I never cared about school till I start working. It was physical job, the salary sucked and I hated it. I just knew I could do much better then ended up being regular worker who works his ass off and has to be on constant look up for second job just so he can pay couple bills at the end of the month...

So I decided to go to college, it was the best decision of my life. I could care less about partying or girls, I loved most subjects I studied, especially science... IMO, looking back I did pretty well - today making salary that most people can only dream about while being at the top of food chain...

But if somebody told me before: Go to college, get high GPA, get a great job so you can have a good life, I don’t think it would do it for me. I would be more like “go screw yourself, why don’t you go get high GPA and get a great job yourself”...

IMO you won’t find above average motivation by liking something. You have to dislike something first before you find something that you really like. If I didn’t dislike the physical job I would have never enjoyed studying in college at that level as I did - I would have average GPA and some average degree that everybody else has.... I simply learned to appreciate the opportunity I was given...

English studies? History? Psychology? Business degree? Gimma a break, everybody who is able to focus can do these, especially in states. Don’t make me wrong, I’m not saying those are bad subjects, for example psychology or business degree are very interesting. But the question is, how far do you get with these degrees, you don’t want to spent 4 years working hard on such degree - and then still not being able to find great job, because the reality is, that nobody really cares about these degrees, you have low chances finding great and well paid jobs... The reality is you will end up spending tens of thousands of dollars in loans on your degree - just to find out that you can make more money as a waiter or bartender in local restaurant, for which you don’t need any degree... THAT SUCKS

So don’t get fooled by these degrees, most of them are garbage, they have low value. They won’t feed you well, they only accumulate debts that you will be paying for years.

Also, don’t be stupid, think long term. Once in college study hard, focus on studying, forget girls for now. 4 years is not that long, they can totally change your entire life around... Study hard 4 years, have fun the rest of your life - versus have fun 4 years and then regret for years what a fool you were by spending tens of thousands on a degree that can’t even pay your bills...
