Is it always a bad idea to compliment a girl on her looks?

Is it always a bad idea to compliment a girl on her looks or appearance before having slept with her?

From my experience, even if I'm being 100% authentic and spontaneous, AND the girl is into me, AND I deliver the compliment smoothly and effectively, it still almost always makes them recoil or shut down.

Thoughts?

could you explain more when you say they recoil and shut down? what exactly do they do?

complimenting a girl on her looks before you have slept with her is okay, but you will run into less problems by doing these two things:

1. use compliments as rewards
2. qualify her on her behavior before complimenting her on her looks

some girls, they will have a hard time accepting a looks-based compliment because it leads them to believe you are only looking for sex

Yeah, that sounds about right, I usually get a "oh, you're only gonna use me for sex" and shut down type response.
